PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video signal receiver and a video signal receiving method for performing normal video display by performing signal processing in accordance with the form of a received digital video signal in a digital transmission system that conforms to an HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) standard. SOLUTION: This video signal receiver is provided with a receiving means 18 for receiving a digital signal that conforms to the HDMI standard, an HDMI receiver 19a for separating a video component and a sound component from the received digital signal, discriminating whether the received digital video signal is an RGB signal or a YCbCr signal and changing setting in accordance with the discrimination result, signal processing means 19b and 19c for respectively performing decoding processing of the video signal and the sound signal separated by the HDMI receiver 19a to restor an analog video signal and sound signal or an HDMI receiver 19a having one of the functions of the signal processing means 19b and 19c or both of the functions, and control means 26 to 29 that can change the setting of the HDMI receiver 19a by operation.
