PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polypeptide effective for detecting the infection with a herpes simplex virus (HSV) and a vaccine effective for preventing a disease induced by a recurrent herpes simplex virus (HSV), and to provide a method for producing the polypeptide and the vaccine. SOLUTION: A fragment, which is immunologically equal to a recombinant herpes simplex virus (HSV) glycoprotein B (gB) polypeptide yielded in a host cell having an isolated nucleotide sequence cording for the herpes simplex virus (HSV) glycoprotein B (gB), is provided.
