PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for controlling a double acting air cylinder, by which the total amount of air to be supplied can be reduced as much as possible. SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with a communicating passage 20 for making a first chamber 5 communicate with a second chamber 6 of the double acting air cylinder 2 and a communicating passage opening and closing valve 21 for opening and closing the communicating passage 20. When the double acting air cylinder 2 is operated by supplying air to the second chamber 6, the pressure in the second chamber 6 being lower than that in the first chamber 5, the communicating passage opening and closing valve 21 is opened before supplying air to the second chamber 6.
