PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To respond to a request from a steel production field, required to determine the steel type quickly and simply. SOLUTION: (1) An electrolyte 2 is made to contact with stainless steel 1 of an examined subject, (2) the stainless steel 1 is brought into a plus potential, and the electrolyte 2 is brought into a minus potential, by an external electric power source 3, to make each constitutive component of the stainless steel 1 elute into the electrolyte 2, (3) Mn is oxidized to generate coloration and to form a complex thereof, out of the components, and a Mn amount contained in the stainless steel is determined, based on the degree of the coloration under this condition.
