PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing an 1,3-adamantane diol that is important as a raw material for synthesizing various adamantane derivatives including functional polymers and also useful as one of various coating materials, by reaction using the corresponding 1,3-dihalogenated adamantane as a raw material under ordinary pressure. SOLUTION: The method comprises carrying out a reaction between the corresponding 1,3-dihalogenated adamantane, formic acid and a formate or metal oxide to obtain a reaction liquid containing an "1,3-adamantanediol precursor" such as a 3-halogenated 1-formyloxyadamantane followed by mixing the reaction liquid with water to carry out a reaction to convert the precursor to the objective 1,3-adamantanediol.
