PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and simple method for producingβ-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactone. SOLUTION: A vinylacetic acid represented by general formula (1) is reacted with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acid catalyst having a sulfonic acid group to afford theβ-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactone represented by general formula (2).
