PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator device having improved maintenance efficiency while suppressing an increase in the heightwise size of a shaft. SOLUTION: The elevator device comprises the shaft 1, a passenger car 2 and a counterweight 3 installed in the shaft 1 and movable in the vertical direction, a sheave 7 installed in the shaft 1 at its upper part, a driving motor 9 installed in the shaft 1 at its upper part for driving the sheave 7, and a main rope 5 for hanging the passenger car 2 and the counterweight 3. The main rope 5 has one end fixed to the passenger car 2 and wound around the sheave 7 and the other end fixed to the counterweight 3.
