PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polarizing plate having a structure that facilitates its production while maintaining a condition in which prevention of diffraction is ensured for all luminous fluxes by setting an optimum pitch in accordance with the angle and direction of the incidence of a luminous flux to be used. SOLUTION: The polarizing element is formed such that layers, each of which has a refraction index periodic structure in one direction in the planar direction of the layer with a period shorter than a wavelength to be used, are laminated together so that at least each one layer is perpendicular to its periodic direction. Where P<SB>A</SB>denotes the period of a layer in which the periodic direction and the incident flat surface of the light ray that have the largest incident angle of a luminous flux made incident on the element are comparatively parallel, and P<SB>B</SB>denotes the period of the periodic direction perpendicular to it, the polarizing element satisfies the following conditional expression: P<SB>A</SB>< P<SB>B</SB>.
