PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus at low cost in which a moving picture is displayed in high definition quality with a high speed response time and in which a still picture is superimposed to the moving picture by extending and processing a compressed still picture data. SOLUTION: When a still picture display signal for instructing that the still picture is displayed is input from outside, as a picture memory 102 is used for extending processing, a picture memory control circuit 104 stops using it for storing a digital picture data of one frame portion output from an A/D converting circuit 100 until the completion of the extending processing. A composing circuit 103 composes the digital still picture data restored by a still picture processing circuit and a digital picture data output from the A/D converting circuit.
