PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image inputting apparatus by which focusing time is short regardless of a position of a focus lens before focusing operation and selected magnification, variation of the focusing time is small and thereby operability is excellent even when a variable focal lens is used. SOLUTION: The image inputting apparatus comprises a position detecting means which outputs positional information of a zoom lens (53z) to a control means (102a); and a storage means (102a1) which stores in advance relation between a position of the zoom lens (53z) and a focusing position of the focus lens (53af) corresponding to the position of the zoom lens as Z-F characteristics. The control means (102a) collates output positional information of the zoom lens (53z) with the stored Z-F characteristics and moves the focus lens (53af) to a focal position of the focus lens obtained by collation and then controls a focusing means so that detection of the focusing position is performed on the basis of high frequency components of an image signal.
