PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid state imaging element and solid state imaging unit that have a plurality of vertical scanning circuits and horizontal scanning circuits, can read under independent scanning conditions by the scanning circuits, can freely set a scanning area, and also vary storage time, storage start time and end time, and further frame rate etc., of each frame image constituted of respective pixel signals read by the plurality of different scanning circuits independently of one another. SOLUTION: The solid state imaging element is provided with the plurality of vertical scanning circuits 1 and 2, the plurality of horizontal scanning circuits 11 to 14, a pixel section having pixel elements P11 to P44 each of which is connected to one of the plurality of vertical scanning circuits and one of the plurality of horizontal scanning circuits and arranged two dimensionally and perform photoelectric conversion, and a selecting means 5 of controlling the respective horizontal scanning circuits to independently select and output the photoelectric conversion signals read out of a plurality of horizontally arrayed pixels.
