PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for error diffusion and quantization processing so as to inhibit the formation of a dummy contour even to a picture having continuously changing gradation, and to smoothly change the gradation. SOLUTION: Cumulative error values corresponding to each color component of an aimed picture element are added to picture-element values of each color component (S202), and the picture-element values of each color component after addition processing are quantitized by a quantization method corresponding to whether or not the picture-element values of each color component are contained in either of the gradations G (S204 and S205). The cumulative error values corresponding to each color component of the neighboring picture elements of the aimed picture element are updated by using differential values among the picture-element values of the color components after the addition and the picture-element values of the color components after the quantization.
