The safety device (1) for a motor vehicle (3) has a rear airbag to which is connected at least one positioning and/or bracing and/or restraining device by which the airbag in the inflated state in the event of passenger (8) impact is braced in a predetermined restrained position to eliminate supporting of the airbag on a component part of the vehicle in front of it, and especially the front seat. The airbag is formed by a support airbag (10), and preferably an airbag mat, which in the non-activated state is installed preferably in the roof region (11) and deploys from there downwards into the inside of the vehicle.
