METHOD OF LABELING WITH ISOTOPE OF OXYGEN

A method of labeling one or the two oxygen atoms of the carboxy group of a carboxylated compound with an oxygen isotope which is either oxygen of mass number 17 (<17>O) or oxygen of mass number 18 (<18>O). The method is characterized in that an active ester of a carboxylated compound (carboxylic acid) is reacted with H2<17>O or H2<18>O in the presence of an activator. Due to the use of the activator, the reaction of the active ester of a carboxylated compound with H2<17>O or H2<18>O can be caused to proceed without using severe conditions, e.g., strongly acid conditions or conditions under which alkali hydrolysis is conducted.
