The invention relates to a sonotrode (33) for machining workpieces and to a method for the operation of said sontotode. According to the inventive method, the sonotede enables workpieces to be cut ( 1 ) and welded ( 5 ) simultaneously in a single work process. This results in substantially higher quality machined worpieces in corn-son with or art. According to the invention, cutting and welding occurs in parellel in a single process.
