The invention relates to an outer shell element (1) for a sheet metal access edge (2) of an opening of a motor vehicle, said element being moulded and comprising at least one wall (8) for fixing face-to-face with, and essentially parallel to, an essentially horizontal wall (6) of the sheet metal edge. The inventive outer shell element is characterised in that it comprises at least one reinforcing abutment (12), the outer shell element and the abutment being provided with fixing means enabling the abutment to be placed in a position in which one of the faces thereof presses against the underside of the outer shell wall and the opposing surface can press against the topside of the horizontal wall (6) of the sheet metal edge.
