The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for transmitting data packets in a communication network from a source node to a destination node. The source node sends a data packet to an intermediate node. An intermediate node receives the data packet from the network and forwards the received data packet to the destination node or another intermediate node. The intermediate node comprises a proxy manager (23) which is configured to decide whether to act as a proxy for the received data packet and, in the affirmative, to send a local confirmation packet LACK for confirming the reception of the data packet to the source node or the previous intermediate node of the received data packet. The proxy manager (23) decides separately whether to act as a proxy for individual data packets. The destination node receives the data packet and sends a local confirmation packet LACK for confirming the reception of the data packet to the previous intermediate node.
