Method for metallizing plastic surfaces comprises:etching the surface; treating the surface with a solution of a salt and/or complex of cobalt, zinc, lead, bismuth, palladium, copper, nickel, gold, manganese, zinc or iron; treating the resulting surface with a sulfide solution to form metal sulfide complexes; and metallizing the surface. The complexes are reduced to metal before the surface is metallized in a metallizing bath.
