PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide large magnetoresistive change when a current is made to flow in a direction vertical to the surface of each layer constituting a magnetoresistive effect element. SOLUTION: An MR element 5 comprises a non-magnetic conductive layer 24 having two surfaces turned to the opposite side with each other, a free layer 25 arranged so as to be adjacent to one surface in the non-magnetic conductive layer 24 where the direction of magnetization is changed corresponding to an external magnetic field, and a pinned layer 23 arranged so as to be adjacent to the other surface of the non-magnetic conductive layer 24 where the direction of the magnetization is fixed. The pinned layer 23 is provided with a first pinned layer 31, a connecting layer 33 and a second pinned layer 32. The second pinned layer 32 has three magnetic layers 41, 42 and 43 respectively formed of a magnetic material. Between the magnetic layers 41 and 42 and between the magnetic layers 42 and 43, a laminate composed of a Cu film, a magnetic film and a Cu film is inserted, respectively.
