PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electroluminescent element having sufficient light extraction efficiency because demands for increase of luminescence intensity and reduction of power consumption of the electroluminescent element are strong; and to provide new or high-performance lighting system and display device by developing an electroluminescent element like that. SOLUTION: This electroluminescent element is composed by sequentially stacking, on a transparent substrate, a first electrode layer, a luminescent layer and a second electrode layer. The electroluminescent element is characterized by forming an uneven structure and a reflecting structure such as a mirror finished surface on a side surface of the transparent substrate.
