PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem wherein demands for increase of luminescence intensity and reduction of power consumption of an electroluminescent element are strong; and to provide new or high-performance lighting system and display device by developing an electroluminescent element like that. SOLUTION: This electroluminescent element is provided with a transparent substrate 1, a first electrode layer 2, a luminescent layer 3 and a second electrode layer 4. The electroluminescent element is characterized by having the transparent substrate 1 equipped with an optically directional structure 5 on an interfacial surface with the first electrode layer 2.
