PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compensation method having a high DC compensation capability without reducing encoding efficiency as less as possible. SOLUTION: A plurality of kinds of multi-valued random number sequence R1-R4 having different DC component average values, of which cumulative DC components are divided by the number of multi-valued data of the multi-valued random number sequence, are prepared beforehand, and the plurality of kinds of multi-valued random number sequence having different DC component average values are added (S4), and the cumulative DC components DC1(k)-DC4(k) of multi-valued information column Y1(k)-Y4(k), to which the multi-valued random number sequence R1-R4 are added, are respectively calculated (S5), and the multi-valued random number sequence, the DC component of which become minimum, is selected (S6-S12) from a result of the above calculation, then the DC compensation can be applied to the multi-valued information of a cell unit by such a manner that the DC compensation flag information F(k) showing the selected multi-valued random number sequence and the multi-valued information after the addition of the multi-valued random number sequence are combined and recorded on the information recording medium. Also, the additional information can be reduced since only the addition of DC compensation flag information F(k) is just enough, which shows the selection of the multi-valued random number sequence for every cell of at least from hundreds to thousands units.
