PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new component usable for a nematic, cholesteric or chiral-smectic liquid crystal mixture, and having a combination of high absolute value of dielectric anisotropy and preferable ratio of the viscosity to the clearing point. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by formula (I). The liquid crystal mixture contains the compound. Concretely, the compound is exemplified by 3,4,5-trifluoro-6-methoxy-2-propylphenanthrene.
