<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a circularly polarizing plate with which the viewing field angle dependency of retarders can be compensated and a wide viewing field angle can be obtained in a configuration including the two or more retarders, such as a configuration obtained by laminating the 1/4λretarder and the 1/2λ retarder and a liquid crystal display device using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The circularly polarizing plate comprising a polarizer and an optical layer having a value of N<SB>Z</SB>expressed by the following formula (1), wherein the circularly polarizing plate has a birefringent body of Nz<0 between the polarizer and the retarder of Nz>0. The formula (1) is expressed by N<SB>z</SB>=(n<SB>x</SB>-n<SB>z</SB>)/(n<SB>x</SB>-n<SB>y</SB>). In the formula, n<SB>x</SB>and n<SB>y</SB>represent main refractive indices within the plane to light of a wavelength 550 nm and satisfy n<SB>x</SB>≥n<SB>y</SB>; n<SB>z</SB>represents the main refractive index in a thickness direction to light of a wavelength 550 nm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
