<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for conducting a pilot test, capable of suitably setting a reaction condition of vapor-phase catalytic reaction for which a multitubular reactor is used, and to provide an apparatus for the same. <P>SOLUTION: This method for conducting the pilot test comprises positioning a plurality of reaction tubes in a heating medium, wherein the reaction tubes are substantially equal to reaction tubes composing the multitubular reactor, at least one of the reaction tubes is equipped with a measuring means of a temperature of a catalyst layer, and others of the reaction tubes are not equipped with the measuring means. Further, the method comprises passing a prescribed raw material gas through the reaction tubes, so as to make the gas react, measuring the temperature of the catalyst layer, analyzing simultaneously a reaction result of a reaction product gas discharged from the reaction tubes which are not equipped with the measuring means, and setting the reaction condition of the multitubular reactor based on the assumption that reaction at the measured temperature of the catalyst layer brings about the analyzed reaction result.
