PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording/reproducing device and a recording/reproducing method for realizing a sure focus control discrimination operation while preventing damage to a recording medium due to a scratch, etc., with respect to the recording medium, the kind of which is unknown (e.g. CD, DVD or BD). SOLUTION: Since the focus discrimination operation is carried out by using first the light source of the CD (optical system 20 for the CD), which has a longest wavelength among those of BD/DVD/CD, a collision of an objective lens 12 with an optical disk medium 11 at the focus discrimination operation is prevented, then possibility of damaging the optical disk medium 11 can be evaded.
