PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera capable of speedily setting a zoom lens at a desired zoom position. SOLUTION: This camera has its photographic range for a subject 11 changed through operator's operation. Then this camera can alternate an optical zoom mode wherein the photographic range is changed by varying the focal length of the photographic lens 12 with a digital zoom mode wherein the photographic range is changed without varying the focal length of the photographic lens 12 of the camera. In the optical zoom mode, an image processing part 34 performs image processing by using the entire region of a subject image obtained from an imaging element 17. In the digital zoom mode, on the other hand, image processing is performed by using an area of a portion of the subject image obtained from the imaging element 17. Further, a mode setting part 52 sets whether or not a temporary stop can be made at the time of mutual switching between the optical zoom mode and digital zoom mode according to the state of the camera.
