An improved trigger system for a handgun, especially for sport and competition applications, has an adaptor mechanism fitted to the firing system which requires the user to pull and hold the trigger while aiming and to release the trigger to fire the handgun, similar to an archer releasing the bowstring. The mechanism operates the firing system using spring pressure. New handguns can be provided with fittings for the optional new trigger release. Adaptor kits can be fitted to existing handguns.
