PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a variable attenuator capable of reducing signal passage loss in a reference state. SOLUTION: The variable attenuator comprises an FET 1 provided between an input terminal 5 and an output terminal 6, series-connected FETs 2-1.., 2-N for a plurality of the variable attenuators series-connected between a source and drain of the FET 1 across the input and output terminals 5, 6, and a plurality ofπtype attenuators 4 parallel-connected to each of the series-connected FETs for the variable attenuators. The variable attenuator is equipped with a multibit series-connected variable attenuators formed by series-connecting a plurality of unit bit series-connected variable attenuators 3 comprising the series-connected FET for the variable attenuator and theπtype attenuator 4.
