PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for encoding/decoding a digital signal utilizing linear quantization by blocks. SOLUTION: A digital signal encoding method includes the steps of (a) converting a digital input signal to remove overlapping information between signals; (b) computing the number of bits to be allocated for each predetermined quantization unit, while considering signal significance; (c) dividing the distribution of signal values into predetermined blocks, with respect to the predetermined quantization unit and linearly quantizing data converted in the step (a) by blocks; (d) and generating the linearly quantized data and predetermined additional information into a bit stream. Thus, the complexity of a non-linear quantizer can be reduced markedly, even while improving the sound quality, using a general linear quantizer while taking into consideration the distribution of the audio data.
