The position of a reflecting element is displaceable relative to the end (2a) of an optical waveguide (2) of a Fabry-Perot fiber interferometer (14). An evaluation unit determines the size of the displacement based on reflected measured light. A displacing device (22) controls the displacement of the reflecting element to increase the spacing between it and the end of the optical waveguide during a measuring operation. An abutment indicator detects the arrival of the reflecting element at a defined stop (10,11). An independent claim is included for a method of measuring the displacement of a reflecting element.
