<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a human recognition system for recognizing the existence of a human, by correcting an luminance value of a pixel in a human candidate area extracted from a detected image data, and an image processing apparatus constituting the human recognition system. <P>SOLUTION: A reference pattern correction section 353 reads out a reference pattern H from a memory 33, modifies the luminance values of the body portion in a luminance distribution of the human to 'zeros', and outputs the coordinates of the modified pixels to a luminance correction section 354. For a human candidate area P1 input from a distance calculation section 352, the luminance correction section 354 corrects the luminance values of the pixels corresponding to the above coordinates to 'zeros', and outputs to a calculation section 355 both a reference pattern Hh and a human candidate area P1h to which the luminance values are corrected. The calculation section 355 then calculates correlation values between the human candidate area P1h and the reference pattern Hh.
