PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for surely removing a foreign material adhered to a white reference member such as paper dust and rubber dust for executing accurate shading correction and automatically removing the foreign material so as to attain maintenance-free such as elimination of the need for cleaning by a user or the like thereby enhancing the usability. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus turns unidirectionally or revolves freely forwardly/reversely the white reference member, a cleaning member with a cleaning purpose foreign material removal mechanism is provided to the revolving path, and the image reading apparatus can surely remove the foreign material by unidirectionally turning or revolving the white reference member so as to be almost tangent to the cleaning member.
