PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generation of recording and reproducing errors caused by size variation of a magnetic tape along its width direction and to provide high recording density of data tracks in a tracking servo system recording and reproducing method. SOLUTION: The track widths of the data tracks are stepwise set small as they approach to servo tracks (4T-1 to 5 or the like). Thus, the track widths of data tracks (A1-41T-1 to 5 or the like) which are close to the servo tracks are minimized and the number of data tracks can be greatly increased. Moreover, when data tracks (A8-41T-1 to 5), which are separated from the servo tracks due to the size change of a magnetic tape 1 along the width direction caused by the change in the external environment such as temperature and humidity or the like, are deviated position wise, positioning of a data head (A8) is made easy during reproducing due to the increase in the size of the track widths, reading of data signals from the data tracks is surely conducted and precision in reproducing is improved.
