摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction stir welding method which can prevent the deterioration of bonding strength when two workpieces to be joined which are different in thickness are joined by friction stir welding. SOLUTION: The two workpieces 1 and 2 different in thickness are made to butt against each other so that one side of both workpieces 1 and 2 is coplanar. A support portion 1a is formed integratedly with the thick workpiece 1 so as to support the thin workpiece 2 from the side opposite to the side where a probe is embedded, by stepping the end of the side to be joined of the thick workpiece 1 so that the support portion 1a and the end to be joined of the thin workpiece 2 are made to be a lap joint. After the probe 5 of a friction stir welding tool 3 is embedded into the butting interface between both workpieces 1 and 2 so that the probe 5 steps over both workpieces 1 and 2, the probe 5 is moved along the butting interface between both workpieces 1 and 2 while the probe 5 is being rotated. The thin workpiece 2 is placed on an advancing side where the front of the rotational direction X of the probe 5 and the direction Y of the probe 5 moving along the butting interface correspond.
