A sheet handling system, especially for a printer, has the leading edge of each sheet (B) engaged by a moving grip (6) which retards the sheet from the higher processing speed of the printer to enable the grip to drop the sheet onto a stack (4). The rear edge of each sheet is likewise retarded by a braking system (8) to drop the rear edge onto the stack without being fouled by the leading edge of the next sheet.
