PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of efficiently taking out pictures one by one from a plurality of stacked pictures. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided with an unscanned medium storage part 10 capable of stacking and storing a plurality of recording media on which images are respectively recorded and having an aperture on its upper part, a carrying part 62 for extracting each recording medium from the unscanned medium storage part 10 and carrying the extracted recording medium, an image reader 30 for reading out an image recorded in the recording medium carried by the carrying part 62 and generating image data, and a computer body device 70 for controlling the operation of the unscanned medium storage part 10 and/or the carrying part 62 to send the recording medium to the image reader 30, acquiring the size of the recording medium and controlling the carrying of the recording medium by a prescribed first mode when the size of the recording medium is a prescribed size or controlling the carrying of the recording medium by a second mode in which the number of recording media to be sent to the image reader 30 per unit time is larger than that of the first mode when the size of the recording medium is larger than the prescribed size.
