PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of polishing a die for molding an optical element, for finishing the die for molding the optical element with high accuracy to obtain the optical element of high accuracy at a low cost by reducing the amount of a molding material used through a decrease in width outside an effective area. SOLUTION: In this method of polishing the die for molding the optical element, load is generated between a polished surface 7a and a polishing tool 1 of spherical shape or partial shape of a sphere, and the die 7 for molding the optical element is polished using loose abrasive grains. At least the long-side peripheral side of the polished surface 7a of the die 7 for molding the optical element is surrounded with a soft material member 9, and during polishing, a polishing tool body scans on the polished surface 7a without contacting a peripheral edge 12 of the polished surface 7a of the die 7 for molding the optical element.
