The system has a steering cylinder (105) which introduces power assisting force into a steering mechanism (101) and continuously connected to a pressure chamber (107) and tank chamber (108) of a hydraulic circuit of a steering valve (106). The mechanism has a hydraulic pump (112) with an adjustable pumping volume in the pressure chamber in addition to a pressure tank (115) for hydraulic medium and a tank valve (121) located upstream from it in the pressure chamber. A release valve (122) is provided upstream from the steering valve to adjust the volume of flow in the pressure chamber. An independent claim is included for a method.
