PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus where a filming material formed on an image carrier is removed even in processing a job of many copies with inexpensive constitution. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has the image carrier 6 for carrying a toner image, a cleaning device 9 for recovering toner remaining on the image carrier after the toner image is transferred to a transfer medium, and a grinding device 100 for removing the filming material on the surface of the image carrier. In the image forming apparatus, the grinding device 100 is constituted of a grinding means 130, a rocking lever 110, and a one-way clutch 120. Then, the image carrier 6 is moved between a working position and a standby position by a switching means. The rocking lever 110 is rocked according as the image carrier is moved between the working position and the standby position, and the grinding means 130 is rotated little by little by the one-way clutch 120 only at the time of rocking in one direction.
