PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for compressing a spring mattress improving particularly transportation efficiency in recovering resources. SOLUTION: In the method of compressing the spring mattress 16, the spring mattress 16 is charged in a compression chamber and pressed from a direction parallel with an end face with a compression plate member 15 in the compression chamber, and cord members 11 are wound around the compressed mattress 16 to bind it. The apparatus for compressing the spring mattress comprises the compression chamber; the compression plate member 15 for compressing the spring mattress 16 charged in the compression chamber, from the direction parallel with the end face; and a means for winding the cord members 11 around the compressed spring mattress 16 to bind it.
