A tire projection-and-recess figure examining method and device for detecting a defect in the three-dimensional shape of a figure with high reliability without using a projection-and-recess luminance distribution image. The method comprises the steps of acquiring projection-and-recess distribution data by measuring the heights of the projections of each area element in a predetermined tire surface area including the figure to be examined, specifying a tire surface part corresponding to a figure model in the tire surface area on the basis of three-dimensional shape data on the figure model previously created as a figure template and the acquired projection-and-recess distribution data, determining the degree of agreement between the projection-and-recess distribution data on the specified tire surface part and the three-dimensional data on the figure model, and judging from the degree of agreement the acceptance/rejection of the three-dimensional shape of the figure.
