<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grooming technique in a mesh network having branch points which reduces the number of wavelength channels without electronic cross connections and is executable, using a commercially available or emerging technology. <P>SOLUTION: In an optical communication system and method, light signals are generated on a plurality of wavelength channels and each passively carried from the originating node of a network to a destination node determined depending on the signal wavelength. For at least some signals, their passive carry includes a carry of them passing from a branch point through an output branch point determined depending on the signal wavelength. In an embodiment, incoming signals having the same wavelength from different originating nodes are generated according to a schedule designed so as to substantially prevent them from arriving at the same destination node. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
