PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine stop and start controller for starting an engine automatically and smoothly to hold a satisfactory vehicle condition during automatic stop. SOLUTION: This engine stop and start controller for detecting operation situation of each element of a vehicle, stopping the engine temporarily in a stop condition during vehicle driving based on the information, and starting the engine when starting the vehicle is provided with a control means for determining the need of starting of the engine when remaining capacity of a battery is determined below a predetermined value in a case of a continuous engine stopped state during vehicle driving.
