PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material which has a higher refractive index and a higher Abbe's number to respond to a need for a new compound with a high refractive index and a high Abbe's number which is used for a plastic lens. SOLUTION: The episulfide compound has a structure represented by formula (1) (wherein R1 is optionally substituted and is a straight-chain or branched 1-4C (thia)hydrocarbon group, a cyclic 3-6C (thia)hydrocarbon group, a 1,4-dithian group, an arylene group or an aralkylene group; R2-R9 are each a hydrogen atom, an optionally substituted linear or branched 1-4C (thia)hydrocarbon group or a cyclic 3-6C hydrocarbon group; and a, b, c and d are each an integer of 0 or 1 and satisfies the formula: 2≤a+b+c+d≤4).
