<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select the operation mode matching the exchange unit, by discriminating whether the exchange unit is a genuine part. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 10 reads the information about the amount of this exchange unit to use from the memory chip provided in the exchange unit, and decides whether this exchange unit is a genuine part or another one, based on this information read about the usage amount.
