PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an impact energy absorbing structural member for maintaining or improving its impact energy absorbing performance while holding down its impact reaction without an increase in manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: The member comprises an angular cylinder 1A formed cylindrical in a polygonal cross section and having a hollow portion 1a filled with an aluminum foam 7 to be collapsed at the stage of undergoing axial impact load while keeping reaction almost constant. At an end 3 of the angular cylinder 1A on the side of undergoing the axial impact load, a cutout 4 is provided which is formed by cutting off an angular portion. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
