A first mobile device (300) is capable of communication with a second mobile device on a communication system employing an unsynchronised timing structure (e.g. Direct Mode Operation (DMO) in a TETRA system). The mobile device (300) comprises a signal processing function (308) coupled to a timer function (318), such that the signal processor function (308) is configured to detect a frame-type of a transmission from the second mobile device and adapt a timing parameter of the timer function (318) in response thereto in order to acquire synchronisation. A method of acquiring synchronisation is also provided. In this manner, by detecting a frame type such as a synchronisation transmission frame/burst, a wireless mobile device is able to synchronise to another mobile device in an unsynchronised communication system using lower power consumption and a lower processor bandwidth. |
