A liquid crystal layer with twisted tilted alignment and a film with twisted tilted alignment can be produced by a method wherein an alignment layer containing a vitreous polymer or a silane coupling agent is formed on a substrate, the surface of this alignment layer is subjected to rubbing, and then a coating liquid containing a chiral agent and a photopolymerizable liquid crystal composition is applied on the alignment layer.
