This disclosure relates to a method for producing and using catalysts in the production of bisphenols, and in particular to a method for producing catalysts which contain poly-sulfur mercaptan promoters, and using these catalysts in the production of bisphenol-A and its derivatives. The poly-sulphur groups are pendant fro a positively charged functionality comprising nitrogen or phosphorous, preferably a nitrogen heterocycle. The catalysts also comprise a solid acid support component comprising a protic acid functionality, preferably a sulfonated polymeric resin.
